The following article has just been published by the Littlehampton Gazette: quote: RESIDENT parking zones and on-street charges are one step closer, following a decision by senior Arun councillors. With Sussex police pulling its traffic wardens off the streets of Arun by the end of next year, the council has opted to take over parking enforcement on behalf of the county council, and the move could see controlled parking zones (CPZ) in Arundel by April, 2011, and Littlehampton by September, 2011.
The same dates will see Arun parking officers taking over enforcement duties on the streets of the two towns, with powers to issue tickets for illegal parking.
Speaking at a meeting of the council cabinet last week, councillor Paul Dendle said: "We have had parking anarchy in Arundel for the last seven years.
"In Littlehampton everyone parks on double yellow lines, and no one gets done for it. Streets are blocked up by people parking there all day."
The scheme could stretch into Rustington, East Preston and Angmering but Chris Barrett, West Sussex County Council's parking contracts manager, was keen to emphasise that all changes, including residential zones, would be subject to a public consultation.
"A controlled parking zone will only go in if it has the support of all the residents. If everyone in Arundel, for example, was strongly against a CPZ, the county council would not force it on them."
Councillor Roger Elkins thought the scheme would bring many benefits.
"If we can remove cars when they are parked on double yellow lines, this will make it easier to move around town.
"I know that the villages, including Rustington, will welcome this, because it brings the parking enforcement that have been asking for."

Parking charges are what caused the issue of cars parking all over the place. People in general resent paying to park. Rustington is a busy village/town due to the free parking - how much of an issue do they have at present with bad parking. A minority of people abuse parking time limits, but most of us park, purchase - go home. Does the village need controlled parking zones - or just better parking facilities!! |

And Littlehampton is a virtually dead town because until very recently it has insisted on charging for parking. Just compare Worthing town centre of a Sunday (free parking) and Littlehampton. |

The awful parking situation in Worthing (ten wardens to every street etc!) will eventually murder small businesses in Worthing in my opinion. The town as a whole needs major investment and updating - the parking charges, restrictions and dishing out of tickets do little to entice people to an already decaying town. This applies to Littlehampton and of course Angmering (albeit on a smaller scale, and it isn't a dump like Worthing). I often pop into Co-Op on my way home, if I had to pay to park/risk getting a ticket I would stop off at Sainsburys or a Tesco Express etc etc. Angmering somehow needs a few extra parking spaces but that has already been covered on other threads I believe. |

True. Maybe Worthing town council should be taken on a bus trip to Littlehampton to see what happens when you mess up parking. As for Angmering, enforced disc parking on the Rustington model would be best. Surely no one needs to park for more than a couple of hours to use the shops etc. Problem is that I expect lots of objections from residents who have bought properties which have no parking, hence they clog up the spaces needed for shoppers. Bit of a no win situation for them, but surely the only answer if the village is to retain any commercial core. |
