In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Angmering's destitute were housed at the district workhouse in East Preston, a building that survived until the 1960s.
Such was the impact of the workhouse that a developer (William Hollis) of the south of East Preston named his new estate "Angmering on Sea" to avoid the stigma of being associated with the EP workhouse.
For those interested, Margaret Gilbert of the EP Preservation Society will be giving a talk on the East Preston Workhouse on Wed 6th June, at the Miller Barn, East Preston Village Hall. @ 2.30 p.m. Tickets (£3) are available from Hedgers Newsagents, 43 Sea Road, E.Preston, or Seaview Stores, 114 Sea Road, E.Preston.
