If your child has a bank account, it may be worth a quick look at a statement. I just did with my son's and found that Santander were deducting tax from the interest. I contacted them and they have updated the account and will refund that taken.
Not a large amount but as he has no NI number, where did it go, and if it is widespread, that could add up to quite a lot of pennies.
