The existing voting system has only ever perpetuated parliaments made up of elite, underworked, overpaid & blatantly self serving MPs who clearly fail to represent their constituents. The expenses scandal shows that whilst they are quite prepared to inflict hardship on ordinary people they continue to shamelessly feed from the public trough. The mismanagement by successive governments over the years has reduced this country to a laughing stock. What have we got to lose by trying the AV system?
In this area the 42% of voters who didn't vote Conservative last time have to question how dedicated 'their' MP is to their interests given that it would take a demographic seismic shift to get anyone other than a Tory in this area. Same position with Labour in parts of the North. Perhaps such MPs are equally dedicated to ALL of their constituents, but they don't need to be to get re-elected. As one of the 42% I'd like my vote to count so will be voting yes for AV. It's a system which I've come across in a range of other types of election and it is very easy to use.
