Residents at Ayton House, on Dapper's Lane, have been rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into some hands-on DIY - all in the name of sharing skills with the next generation. As part of Care UK's 'Fixer Uppers' programme, residents put their upcycling skills to the test and made bird boxes from reclaimed wood, working with the 1st Angmering Brownies to decorate them. The activity gave residents an opportunity to share their tips and tricks with the youngsters, from securing the roof panels to adding finishing touches to make each one unique.
Resident Rosamund Carpenter said: "I enjoyed the joy the children brought to the home. I loved getting involved and helping the children paint, it reminded me of my childhood!" Launched to celebrate International Repair Day, the Fixers Uppers initiative aims to revive traditional skills - such as fixing furniture, mending clothes and tackling small maintenance jobs - and champion the invaluable knowledge older generations can pass on while promoting sustainability.
...
Joel Ignacio, Home Manager at Ayton House, said: "Residents here have a wealth of skills and life experiences, and the Fixer Uppers project has been a wonderful opportunity for them to share their knowledge with the younger generation. Whether it's building, planting or simply lending advice, there's a real sense of pride and purpose that comes from creating something with your hands. We're also excited to be supporting our local wildlife with our creations, so we're really looking forward to seeing a host of friendly birds appear in our garden! "A big thank you to the Brownies for joining us to build bird boxes - it's been a real pleasure working together."
The bird box building activity was overseen by Ayton House's dedicated sustainability champion, as part of Care UK's bid to embed environmentally conscious practices across all homes. Sustainability champions work closely with the Care UK ESG advisory committee to identify opportunities for greener ways of working, from reducing waste to encouraging biodiversity in care home gardens. Do you live in an historic timber framed building in Angmering or surrounding area that you would like to know more about?
To this end the Wealden Building Study Group can provide you with a free interpretive survey of your property to enable you to understand it further and have been doing this for the last 60 years There will be many examples of historic buildings in your parish/town and surrounding villages, and the members of the WBSG have been steadily working over the intervening decades to identify and record as many of these buildings dating between 1200 -1700 that still survive in Sussex and Western Kent.
Over the life of a historic building it can encapsulate many different periods, sometimes obvious externally but often masked by a later period exterior façade, whilst an earlier structure survives hidden within.
Your house may have previously been subject to a similar survey but the subject of vernacular architecture has been steadily developing in accuracy over the intervening years so if that survey was more than two decades ago please also consider inviting a re-evaluation by the group.
Several of the Group's founding members were involved in the initiative that established the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum which is holding its 55th anniversary this year and was founded principally in response to the destruction of many important timber framed buildings in Crawley and elsewhere in the South East during the 1960's.
Since those early beginnings, the Group as individuals and collectively have managed to interpretively survey over 2,000+ buildings to date in addition to the 1,800+ buildings in East Sussex recorded by members David & Barbara Martin.
...
Over the years a proportion of these buildings were lost to 'development' which was thankfully addressed by the 1990's planning policy requirements, and subsequently by fire (eg. recently the Angel Hotel, Midhurst) which has provided a timely reminder of how important the work of the Group is in establishing a comprehensive and authoritative record of as many of these historic buildings as possible. Sadly some of these buildings, destroyed before these revisions and subsequent accident had not been recorded, hence the Group are keen to record as many of the buildings in your area as possible over the coming years.
The Group carry out their interpretive surveys during the months of April to October inclusive (ad hoc visits have been made at other times if briefly exposed hidden structure needs recording) and visits are normally undertaken on a Saturday or Sunday by mutually convenient arrangement. These are free of charge and the householder will have the opportunity to hear about the structural development of their house during the discussion at the end of the visit and will subsequently be provided with an interpretive report and ground plan based on the survey. Copies of the report will subsequently be lodged with the respective County Records Office for further research by authenticated scholars.
If you have an historic timber-framed house in the local area, the Group would appreciate hearing from you. You can get in touch through their website at https://www.wealdenbuildings.org.uk/contact/contact-us or John (the Visits Secretary) can be contacted directly on johncrane@wealdenbuildings.org.uk

Public Inquiry
Arun District Council recently announced that members of the public can still book to attend the Public Inquiry. PFWBR are keen to have as many people as possible attending on Day 1 (Tuesday 28th October) so that the Inspector sees the level of public opposition to this development. The Inquiry is set to begin at 10am, so we are asking supporters to arrive at Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton at 9am sharp, so that there is plenty of time for everyone to get into the Council Chambers.
