Mr Terence Kay

We regret to learn of the passing of Mr Terence Kay on 11 August, aged 94, in Farnham, Surrey. Terence had moved to Alton from Angmering in 2018 to be closer to his children, and later to a nursing home in Farnham. Previously, he had lived in Angmering since 1964, initially on Cumberland Road and later at 27 Lansdowne Road. We offer our sincere condolences to his family.

In December 2002, Terence was honoured by being made a Freeman of Angmering, only the fourth villager to receive this award. The honour was made by Angmering Parish Council to recognise Terence's 27 years' service to the Parish Council and to the community. He was chairman of the Parish Council from 1992-94 and from 2001-2002. Additionally, he was chairman of the planning committee for some eight years.

Contributions to the community and Parish Council have included designs for a scheme to improve the village centre, fighting for a reduction in the number of houses on Bramley Green, assisting in the re-design of the Village Hall frontage, three years as a governor of St. Margaret's School and The Angmering School, organiser of the construction of the William Older Playgroup building, and producing an award-winning tree planting scheme.

Terence was also a founder member of The Angmering Society in 1973 which he helped and supported for over 30 years. In addition to being a Life Vice-President of the Society, he undertook the rôles of President (1990-96), Chairman (1980-83), and Vice-Chairman (1983-86). He was also a member of the Angmering Building Studies Group from 2004 to 2007.

A keen amateur artist, Terence painted scenes and houses around the village, and contributed many sketches for The Angmering Society's booklet, "Angmering - Reminiscences of Bygone Days", published in 2003.

The funeral will be held at 11:45 on Friday 27th September at St Margaret's Church, Angmering, followed by a reception at Angmering Manor Hotel. The family would be honoured if anybody would like to join them in remembering and giving thanks for his life.

Bewley Road Development Protest

Some 150 local residents gathered on the fields on the west side of Bewley Road on Tuesday evening (20 August) to protest at the proposed building of 190 dwellings on prime agricultural land to the west of the road. Another 30 resident apologised for not being able to attend.

Among those attending and giving support to the protesters was our Member of Parliament (Beccy Cooper), our County Councillor representing Angmering (Deborah Urquart), and one of our District Councillors (Andy Cooper) - see photo below (Beccy Cooper on right).

......

There are 10 large-scale housing developments currently under construction in Angmering, only two of which are nearing completion. Since 2002, the population of Angmering has increased by 100% and set to reach about 13,000 people in the next few years. The infrastructure simply cannot sustain these numbers, while we need to maintain as much agricultural land as possible to feed the increasing population.

This photo has be 'doctored', by the addition of two valid developments which had been missed off the sign, which graphically illustrates the state of development in Angmering. The majority of residents are angry about the contempt being shown to them by developers and by Arun District Council decisions. Enough is enough!

Outline planning permission is being sought by Gleeson Land to develop nearly 40 acres of farmland that has regularly been used for vital crop growing for countless generations. The full planning application ( No. A/154/24/OUT ) can be found at https://www1.arun.gov.uk/aplanning/OcellaWeb/planningDetails?reference=A/154/24/OUT

More details of this proposed development by the community group opposing any development on agricultural land west of Bewley Road can be found on the website at https://savelandwestofbewleyroad.co.uk . Angmering Village Life is also totally opposed to this inappropriate development and urges readers to support the opposition campaign and register their objections with Arun District Council by 19 September 2024.
