Fighting Overdevelopment. The Rustington Golf Centre Appeal

Readers may like to know that our MP, Andrew Griffith, today made the following comments in his latest newsletter:

"Yesterday (Tuesday 6 September), I joined Angmering Parish Council and others in making representations to the planning inspectorate regarding the Rustington Golf Centre development appeal. I have been clear repeatedly that this is a disproportionately large development which Arun District Council, under their new leadership, were right to reject in the first place.

We do not need more homes on greenfield sites in this area, especially when the number of new homes being bult locally is already far in excess of the average. With permissions for around 6,000 new homes in Arun already granted, this development is simply not being driven by local housing need.

This development is also in the wrong place, it jeopardises the green gap and lacks a credible plan to deal with the danger of the A259, where it risks increasing traffic, congestion, and accidents. Green gaps between villages and neighbourhoods are what give places their identity, and are explicitly referenced in National Planning Policy.

Finally, the local area is already suffering indigestion from development that has already taken place. I hear regularly from residents bemoaning the pressure on schools, health services, and dentists in the area. In fact, not a single dentist serving the area has the capacity to take on new adult NHS patients. Pumping more housing into an area where services are already struggling to keep up is simply not going to help anybody.

I spend a lot of my time fighting unsustainable, unwanted overdevelopment, and I am happy to be making a representation on their behalf in this case, following on my letter to the Secretary of State for Housing some months ago. I sincerely hope that the planning inspectorate will see reason and uphold Arun District Council's decision to refuse planning permission".
