Old Chandler's BMW site

Last year, McCarthy Stone submitted an application to build retirement apartments on the site of the old Chandler's BMW garage in Water Lane. In October 2021, Arun District Council (ADC) refused permission to build for a number of reasons and in particular the mass of the building as viewed from The Square.

McCarthy Stone have made an application to the Planning Inspectorate to appeal against ADC's decision and this is likely to be heard later in the year on the basis of a public enquiry. Notwithstanding the appeal, McCarthy Stone will be submitting amended plans to ADC which seek to overcome the previous reasons for refusal.

Storm damage

As forecast, Storm Eunice blew through the village yesterday (Friday) causing some damage although probably not as much as had been expected. Winds of between 60mph and 80mph had been predicted but our weather station off Roundstone Lane only recorded a maximum of 53mph but this was sufficient to cause relatively minor damage. In Station Road and Roundstone Lane, large tree limbs fell in or close to the roads and throughout the village dozens of fence panels blew down. In The Square, one glass panel and its surrounding wood frame of the noticeboard outside the Parish Council office were broken. On the Honey Lane allotments, a number of sheds and greenhouses sustained damage. A number of covers to garden furniture/BBQs also blew away and there were reports of some roof tiles being blown off. Angmering and other rail stations were closed for a long period as debris had fallen on the tracks. Schools were also closed for the day and all West Sussex libraries (including Angmering) were closed while there were no postal deliveries. More high winds are forecast for both today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday).

Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Angmering Parish Council has established a new community grant pot of £5,000 for 2022 to support groups in Angmering who are planning to organise celebratory activities for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend between Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June 2022. Activities outside these dates (in May/June) will also be considered as long as they clearly celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Grant applications can be made up to a maximum of £500 and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. All groups, clubs, associations and businesses within Angmering are eligible to apply. The Council are not organising a specific event, but instead decided to make funding available to as many people as possible, within Angmering, to enable them to put on a variety of events that will appeal to people across the village. Funding is available for such things as bunting and flags, to the hiring of a face painter or providing funds for an organised afternoon tea

Chippy to reopen

Big Fry in The Square has had a major refit and is planning to reopen on Monday 7 February if all goes well. A new impressive cooking range with electronic controls and display panels has been installed together with a new stainless steel counter. New electronic menu boards have also been installed which are backlit and programmable and very clear. Customers will also be able to order in advance and receive a QR code for their order speeding up the ordering and collection process. Orders are placed electronically from the till to the operators of the cooking range without the need for the paper order slips that had been used previously. I'm sure all villagers would wish Big Fry every success utilising their new equipment and welcome them back after their January closure.

The Stone Room - Update

Back in September 2021, we reported that The Stone Room would hopefully be opening around Easter 2022 - if planning permission etc could be approved - on the premises previously occupied by Angmering Framing and Stitches in The Square. This would be under the management of The Lamb at Angmering senior team headed by Martin Newbon, the Managing Partner, and Gemma Mason, their General Manager. It is intended to offer a competitively priced menu selection including Stone Baked Pizza and Pasta dishes along with a variety of toppings and sides, as well as desserts.

Some things have taken a bit longer to resolve but, on 28 January, the lease was finally completed and signed. Angmering-based Cloud 9 has been appointed as lead contractor. 3 phase electrics (for commercial businesses) is needed to be brought into the building and UK Power Networks will be on site sometime in the near future to complete this task - this will take approximately 7 to 10 days and the management apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause as this will necessitate some digging across The Square.

Work to transform the existing premises into an exciting new restaurant venue in Angmering will commence shortly and it is hoped to open the establishment around April/May.
