Housebuilder supports Community Fridge

Fundraising to keep a refrigerated delivery van on the road for the Littlehampton Community Fridge has been supported with a £500 donation from David Wilson Homes this month. The housebuilder, who is currently building its Ecclesden Park development in Angmering (south of Water Lane), has pushed fundraising up to the halfway mark to keep the van running during the festive period.

The Littlehampton Community Fridge donates surplus food supplies to residents in need in the Littlehampton and surrounding district, with the van being a vital part of its operations. The organisation aims to reduce food waste by providing excess food to individuals and families that are struggling to make ends meet this Christmas, and the van is used regularly to pick up some of the donations from supermarkets. In addition, the van takes food to Angmering, Rustington and East Preston as part of its 'Fridge on Tour' initiative.

Kimberley Benson, Sales and Marketing Director for David Wilson Southern Counties, comments: "We believe the Community Fridge is a great way of reducing waste while supporting families who need a bit of help during this expensive time of the year. We are really pleased to help cover the costs of the refrigerated van this Christmas, which we hope will go some way to helping keep the much-needed service on the road."

Sarah Renfrey from Littlehampton Community Fridge comments: "We are expecting to be incredibly busy over the festive period, especially with the prices of many key ingredients for Christmas dinners having risen significantly, almost as much as 25%. The van is very important to us as it is crucial to helping us pick up and deliver food to those who need our services. We thank David Wilson Southern Counties for its generous contribution towards keeping our van on the road over Christmas."

Developer donates tree saplings and bulbs to village school

David Wilson Homes is once again encouraging children in Sussex to think about taking a more sustainable approach to Christmas this year. The housebuilder is building new homes at its Ecclesden Park development in Angmering and has donated 120 replantable Christmas tree saplings to pupils at St Wilfrids Catholic Primary School in Arundel Road, Angmering.

The campaign is set to highlight David Wilson Homes' own approach to sustainability, having committed to becoming the first housebuilder to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, and to building net zero carbon homes by 2030, with the housebuilder committing to purchasing 100% of its operational energy from renewable sources.

Pupils will be able to take home their sapling trees to be enjoyed for many festive seasons to come and will serve as a reusable alternative to single use cut or plastic trees. The campaign serves as a timely encouragement for children and families to think about how everyone can take small steps towards protecting the environment, and reduce waste during the gift-giving season.

Research reveals that 90% of children are now spending more time outside since the first lockdown started, highlighting the increasing importance of outside spaces for mental wellbeing as well as for physical activity*. With this in mind, David Wilson Homes has additionally donated a selection of daffodils, tulips and other bright flower bulbs to St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary School, about 10-15 minutes' walk away from the housebuilder's Ecclesden Park development on the south-east side of Water Lane that extends up to the rear of The Spotted Cow PH.

With regard to the tree saplings Miss Carless, Headteacher at St Wilfrids Catholic Primary School, said: "We must strive towards a more sustainable lifestyle, and we welcome this donation from David Wilson Southern Counties to help our children do their bit to become greener. It's a very festive take on sustainability, as we look forward to seeing the children's trees grow!". On the bulbs she added "We are really happy to have been involved in this hands-on project from David Wilson Southern Counties, and it has ensured the children are outside enjoying the fresh air and contributing to their playground. We all now have to be patient after the children's hard work and look forward to seeing them bloom next year!".

Kimberley Benson, Sales and Marketing Director for David Wilson Southern Counties, commented: "Taking a more sustainable approach as we build new homes remains our top priority and it is something we are acting on now. This is the second year we have run this festive campaign at schools near our developments and it serves as a reminder to make more environmentally considerate options. The campaign aligns with our own sustainability targets, including a 29% reduction of carbon emissions by 2025. We hope the children and their families enjoy planting and caring for their trees". Turning to the donation of the bulbs she said: "As a sustainable housebuilder, we aim to help local school children learn how to provide habitats for local wildlife that are going to remain for many future generations when looked after. We are glad that the children enjoyed planting them, and we hope they bring colour and encourage further wildlife to the school's outdoor space in the forthcoming spring."

David Wilson Southern Counties is building these new homes at Ecclesden Park in Angmering, just 1000 metres from St Wilfrids Catholic Primary School. Once complete, the development will feature a number of sustainable measures including bat boxes, swift bricks, wildflower meadows, and EVCP charging points on selected properties. Currently available is a selection of three and four-bedroom homes with prices starting from £434,995 for a three-bedroom home. They have a sales office situated on Weavers Hill.
