The rainbow bench

Further to our news item of 19 November, the beautiful sculptural rainbow bench was duly unveiled this afternoon (Wednesday 24th) on land next to the Community Centre.

The rear of the bench contains a panel (see photo below) with a history of the project, the sponsors, and interprets its symbolism. Part of the text states: "The rainbow, dog and sunflower all symbolise hope. The experience of sitting on the bench, or interacting with the sculpture, is intended to bring comfort and joy to all ages. If you feel lonely, sitting next to the dog could make you feel better".

Unveiling of sculptural bench

Angmering’s new sculptural bench, an innovative public art project involving students from The Angmering School, artist Tim Ward and Littlehampton engineers, will be unveiled on land east of the Community Centre on Wednesday, 24 November at 2.30pm..

The design, featuring a large rainbow and a friendly dog was created by year-nine students Lily, Ruby and Safiya and interpreted by Tim, a proclaimed public artist and founder of Circling the Square. The Sunflower, Dog & Rainbow Bench was the winning design, as voted by the public and assessed by parish councillors, representatives from Pallant House Gallery and the youth arts charity Artswork.

Autumn images of St Margaret's

These autumnal photos from St Margaret's churchyard have kindly been sent to me by Bill Barwell.

....

The photo of the tower from directly underneath is particularly interesting as beneath the window there is a datestone for 1507 written in Latin. It is an abbreviation of "Anno domini milesimo quingentissimo septimo". The tower was erected by the Bridgettine Order of Syon House, Isleworth. The Bridgettine Order, or more correctly The Order of Our Most Holy Saviour, was founded by St Bridget of Sweden in the 14th Century.
