Archaeology tours of Water Lane building site

From February 2021, Thames Valley Archaeological Services (South) [TVAS] have been excavating part of the site south of Water Lane where the construction of houses is due to commence later in the year. Approximately 60cm of topsoil was initially removed to allow the excavations to commence. Their excavations only have covered the southern part of the building site, just north of The Spotted Cow PH, where prior geophysical surveys suggested excavations might prove more fruitful. On Saturday 24 April 2021, TVAS gave short tours of the site to the public prior to the completion of their work which is anticipated before the end of May. They also exhibited finds to date.

The finds help date the site from late-Iron Age to early-Roman. For more details of the excavations and photos, click here.

School plants 100 trees

Students at The Angmering School have planted 100 trees in the school grounds, with the help of the charity Concordia. The children in year seven helped plant ten different species as part of The Conservation Volunteers’ #IDigTrees campaign. Trees planted included goat willow, hazel, hawthorn and bird cherry. Concordia said it chose to partner with the school for this project as the two already have a close working relationship.

Fiona Callender, head of volunteering at Concordia, said: “How lovely to see people for real, be outdoors and to do some conservation. We have some very happy year-seven students, who are going to look after their trees for at least for the next 5 years.

Angmering students have benefited from Concordia’s NCS programme in the past, as well as the new wellbeing programme, designed to boost self-confidence and encourage self-care.

Old Chandlers' Site - Water Lane

McCarthy & Stone have announced, through a rather patchy leaflet drop in Angmering this week, that they have purchased the old Chandlers' garage site in Water Lane and that they intend to build an 'H'-shaped complex there comprising approx 33 one and two bedroom apartments and a large retail unit with apartments above it. Apartments can be occupied by people aged 60 or over and are provided for outright sale, as well as shared ownership, rent and part rent-part buy.

Vehicle and pedestrian access to the site will be provided via the existing entrance points on Water Lane and High Street to take cars and refuse vehicles safely off the road. The proposals include a total of 38 car parking spaces, comprising 24 residential spaces, 2 spaces for Eachways and 12 for proposed retail unit.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, McCarthy & Stone are holding a consultation on their proposals in the form of a virtual exhibition which can be seen at https://mccarthyandstoneconsultation.co.uk/angmering/virtual-exhibition/

The consultation period runs until 16 April 2021 after which McCarthy & Stone will be developing a planning application for submission to Arun District Council.

In response to severe queues experienced at some sites since opening with social distancing in place, from Monday 29 March, WSCC will be trialling a booking system for attending their Waste Recycling Sites (including Littlehampton). This is a measure that a number of other councils have successfully introduced. The appointment system will:

Village Gates - Cllr. N Hamilton-Street commented that village gates had been looked into before and unfortunately APC had been advised by WSCC Highways department that there was nowhere safe in the village to put them. Cllr. Oldfield echoed what had been said and commented that this subject went back a long way and had been unsuccessful on all occasions. Cllr. N Hamilton-Street suggested that APC could investigate again as things may now have changed.

Office Relocation - The Clerk updated the committee on what had been done to date which included valuations being undertaken on the flat above the office and the office itself. The Committee Clerk had visited two potential sites with an architect to understand what was possible. Cllr. N Hamilton-Street advised that a full proposal would be drawn up for consideration by the Committee in the coming months. The Clerk finished by commenting that both potential sites were aware of this project.

Committee Structure 2021/22 - She confirmed that the changes proposed were to change the current Highways, Transport & Planning (HTP) committee to the Planning & Infrastructure (PI) committee. The current Community, Leisure, Environment & Wellbeing (CLEW) committee would see the word Environment changed to Employment. A discussion then took place regarding what each committee was responsible for. Cllr. Verrinder asked if the ‘Conservation Area’ currently sitting under Housing could be moved to a line of its own as she had concerns as this was potentially a large subject – this was agreed.
