"Light in Dark Places" - an evening with Fiona Castle

Looking back over 50 years, Fiona Castle will be sharing fascinating insights about her life and experiences, including her days as a professional ballet dancer and theatre performer working with Harry Secombe and Eric Morecambe among other famous stars. She tells how she came to invite Jesus into her life and the transformation that He bought about in her. Fiona also says how she met, fell in love with and subsequently married Roy Castle in 1963.

Snippets from the Minutes of the Parish Council meeting on 18 February 2013

The late District Councillor Julie Hazlehurst
The Chairman reported with great sadness the death of Julie, explaining that he had known her for nearly six years and wished to record his regard for the time and effort she had given to the parish, even when seriously ill. This devotion to the work of the parish would be sorely missed.

Co-option of a Parish Councillor
On a proposal by Councillor Mariner, seconded by Councillor Graham it was RESOLVED to co-opt Mr. Leverick, by a vote of 8-1 as a councillor.

The new Chandler's BMW/Mini Dealership Facility, at Roundstone Farm.
It was RESOLVED that the Parish Council response would be an OBJECTION to the application on the basis that it was an intrusion into the Strategic Gap, was outside the built-up area boundary and would seriously impact on the local highway network, particularly the A259.

Library Working Party Report
There were contradictory messages coming from West Sussex County Council with statements being made that volunteers from Angmering were being asked to work in other libraries rather than the one in the village. This was unsatisfactory. The Clerk would try to find out what was going on.

Snippets from the Minutes of the Parish Council's Leisure Committee meeting on 29 January 2013

St Nicholas Garden (Public Consultation)
Councillor Francis provided information on a project in St. Nicholas Garden which is being progressed to identify the exact location of the original medieval church working with Worth Archaeological Society and using geo-physics, with the intention of marking out the foundations. This project hopes to involve the local primary schools and Angmering School in the practical work involved and expenses have been identified to carry through the project. The Archaeological Society will not be making any charge for their assistance, but in Stage 2, trowels will be needed for the school children and at the third stage, the marking out will be the most expensive. Councillor Francis therefore requested, on behalf of the Environment Committee, that this Committee considers a grant from their Heritage & Tourism budget to assist towards some of the identified expenditure in the sum of £250.00. As the budget showed funds are available, Members AGREED to make a grant of £250.00.

Graffiti competition for the Skate Bowl
The Art Department at Angmering School has confirmed keenness to take part and is working towards an activity day with Year 8 (12/13 year olds) in March when one of the modern artists being studied is Grayson Perry. It is proposed that a funding application is made to the Police Property Act Fund which is being supported by the local PCSO and Members discussed the prizes fund required, deciding that this should be a total of £200.00 representing two categories each with a prize of £75 and £25. Prizes to be determined. Councillor Verrinder confirmed that there was additional funds available towards the skate bowl area in the sum of £11,757 which could be used towards the skatebowl surround and the BMX track.

District Councillor Mrs Julie Hazlehurst

It is learned with much regret that Julie Hazlehurst, one of three Arun District Councillors representing Angmering, died in Worthing Hospital on Friday (1st February). Julie, who lived in Angmering since 2000, was a widow with two sons, both of whom were educated at The Angmering School, and to whom we extend our deepest sympathies.

Julie was first elected as a conservative councillor on Arun District Council in 2003 representing the Angmering & Poling Ward and was twice re-elected. She served on a number of the Council’s committees including the Joint Eastern Area Committee. As a member of the Development Control Committee she helped to ensure that all developments were fully discussed before decisions were made.

Julie had suffered from ill health for the past two years but she did not let this prevent her from taking a very active interest in the affairs of the village and continuing to be a valued member of the Arun District Council. In addition to her work as a District Councillor, she was a founding trustee of the Angmering Community Centre.

She worked in credit control with various companies, including 14 years with Royal Sun Alliance. Since 2002 she had worked for United Merchants in Rustington.
