Snippets from the Minutes of the Parish Council's Highways Committee meeting on 23 October 2012

Bramley Green Road Adoption
SW reported she had chased West Sussex County Council regarding the work that had to be done but they still didn’t know the date.

Arundel Road/A27 Parking Problems
Councillor Bos said that this road area was not covered by West Sussex County Council but by the Highways Agency so WSCC had referred the matter to them. Councillor Bicknell said the overhanging bushes and shrubs did not help the view. SW will report the bushes to WSCC.

Disabled Parking
There is only one disabled space in the village, although another one or two would be welcome, but because the number of spaces is limited, it would be better to create a new space rather than convert. Councillor Bicknell said he thought there was space for another vehicle outside the Pearl Dental surgery. Councillors Mariner, Biss and Bos will investigate and report back to the Committee.

Padgett's Crossing
The work had been done on the Roundstone Level crossing. Councillor Bos said that we were still waiting for the meeting with WSCC and Network Rail on the future of Pagetts Crossing. Councillor Bos also said that the road either side of the level crossing was in poor condition and needed repair. SW will chase Sue Furlong on both these issues.

Candle causes fire

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to a terraced house in Parsons Close on Bramley Green at 5:17pm yesterday (Wednesday) after a Candle Bag placed on a windowsill set light to the bedroom blind and window sill.

The occupier, a woman in her 30s, had left the Halloween-themed candle bag burning while she left the house briefly to pick up her daughter. Thankfully, a vigilant neighbour spotted smoke in the upstairs window and raised the alarm by calling 999. A fire crew from Littlehampton were on the scene within minutes but thankfully discovered on entering the property that the fire, which was contained to the blind and window sill, had burnt itself out.

Candle Bags are flame retardant paper bags which, when a tea light is placed inside, are increasingly being used to create both indoor and outdoor lighting effects. Similar in concept to Chinese Lanterns, they are used for special occasions such as Halloween, Christmas, birthdays, weddings, festivals and other events.

Speaking afterwards, Littlehampton Watch Manager, Ian Paine, said: "Thankfully, the fire was contained to the window area and didn't spread but potentially this could have been a serious incident. It appears that the occupier used more than the recommended number of tea lights to create a really bright decorative effect. The excess heat they created caused the window sill and blind to begin to melt. To my knowledge this is the first time we've been called to an incident specifically involving a candle bag. However, like any product that involves a naked flame it's vital that the manufacturer's instructions are followed very carefully. We would also stress how important it is to keep these kind of products out of draughts and well away from curtains and other flammable materials".

Mr Paine added: "Of course, one of the best things you can do to protect your family from fire is to make sure you have working smoke alarms installed in your home and test them regularly. We offer free Home Fire Safety Checks why not give our Community Fire Safety Team on 01243 642879 to find out if you are eligible for one."
