The next Angmering Film Show to be screened at the Angmering Community Centre, Foxwood Avenue, Bramley Green is "INCEPTION" (2010). This will be shown on Saturday 15 January at 7.45pm (doors open 7.30pm).
Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.
This film won the 2010 Hollywood Movie of the Year award, three other awards, and has been nominated for four 2011 Golden Globe awards and a 2011 Grammy.
Tickets for this film show (Certs PG13 - UK12A) - priced at £5 are available from the Community Centre Office, Woodies News, or Angmering Framing and Stitches.
There were two attempts at break-ins to Angmering property last night. These occurred at houses in Cumberland Road and Cumberland Crescent. It is thought that the attempt at Cumberland Road was unsuccessful as the burglars were disturbed in the process. Villagers are therefore warned to ensure their property is secure, particularly if celebrating the start of the New Year this evening.
The Government has announced that it intends to remove regionally imposed house building targets and return responsibility to set these to the local level. Consequently, Arun District Council would like your views on the number of homes that should be built in the Arun district over the next 17 years up to the year 2028.
To this end, an Open Meeting is being held at Angmering Community Centre, Foxwood Avenue, Bramley Green on Wednesday 26 January 2011 at 7.30pm. If you have any interest in future housing in Angmering, it is essential that you attend the meeting and make your views known.
You can also submit your views to the Council by using their on-line consultation form.
Refuse and recyclables will be collected on their normal days over the Christmas and New Year period - put your refuse and recycling out on your normal collection day. Excess recyclable material will be collected if in a secure cardboard box, at the side of the recycling bin.The last day of collection for Brown Bins (green garden waste) will be Friday 17th December and collections will resume on Tuesday 4th January 2011. You will not be able to dispose of your fir or pine Christmas tree as refuse unless you are a member of the Green Waste Club, services of which will resume on Monday 4 January.

Gritting of Pavements
The
Chairman stated that there had been a positive response from the public to the
gritting of pavements in the village during the recent snowfall. One down-side
was the removal of locks from one grit bin and the theft of its contents,
leaving none for following days needs. The theft had been reported to the
Police and this would be looked into. He wished to offer his thanks to the
staff and to Councillor Jenny Bos for undertaking this work on each of three
mornings. The overall cost of providing the bins and equipment amounted to less
than £1,500.
Parish Precept 2011/2012
At its
last meeting, Policy & Finance Committee had recommended that the precept
be increased by the identified inflationary element of £5,709. The Clerk
explained that the resultant increase in Band D Council Tax would be a lower
percentage than the identified 2.6% because the Tax Base had increased between
2010 and 2011. He also explained that there was a great deal of uncertainty
relating to all forms of local government because of the changes proposed by
the centre and the upcoming Localism Bill. For this reason it was important
that the Parish Council balanced the need to keep the precept to a minimum
whilst leaving as much scope as it could to be able to step into any gaps that
might appear. On a proposal by Councillor Nigel Nunn, seconded by Councillor
Pat Turner it was unanimously RESOLVED to set the precept for the 2011/2012
financial year at £226,923 resulting in a Band D tax bill of
£69.72, an increase of just £0.86 for the year, or 7p per month.
(A 1.1% increase per Policy & Finance Committee minutes - Editor)

Grants
Two grants had been
applied for earlier in the year for which requests had been made for further
financial information. This information had now been provided and on proposals
by Councillor Nunn, seconded by Councillor Bos it was RESOLVED to make grants
of £400 to Angmering Football Club and £300 to Angmering Sunday
Football Club. It was agreed that future requests should be accompanied by
further information identifying the income and expenditure relating to playing
and non-playing activities.
Honey Lane
Following a recent
incident in which a child from St. Margarets School fell into a pothole
in Honey Lane, sustained minor injuries and became very wet and muddy. The
Headteacher had written to the Chairman requesting the Parish Council do
something about the state of Lane. The Clerk outlined the Parish Council
position as leaseholder for approximately 50% of Honey Lane, requiring it to
maintain this section as a Public Right of Way and having responsibility to
maintain the road to a level to allow pedestrians safe passage over it. In
addition, West Sussex had designated Honey Lane as part of its Safer
Routes to Schools network. Honey Lane residents had specified a contract
to undertake the repair of the whole road amounting to a total cost of
£9,200 and, using this as the possible solution, the Clerk had negotiated
a 10% contribution (£920) from 3 West Sussex County Council under the
Safer Route to Schools programme and had been contacted by a
representative from the Allotments Association who offered a contribution of
around £500. A separate exercise had been undertaken where the Clerk had
obtained a quote to carry out the minimum repairs that would fulfil its
responsibilities as leaseholder, which amounted to more than £4,000.
There were also concerns about the legal position of both the Parish Council
and the residents regarding everyones responsibilities. On a proposal by
Councillor Mountain, seconded by Councillor Nunn it was RESOLVED that the
Parish Council would make a contribution of £2,000 towards the scheme, on
condition that the legal position was sorted out once and for all. The Clerk
would investigate this with the Parish Council legal adviser. This contribution
would be made to fulfil the Parish Council responsibilities and would not set a
precedent for the future, either for Honey Lane or any other Private Street in
the village.
Angmering Sports & Recreation
Association
The Parish Council owns the building
currently used by the Sports Clubs, including both the club-house and the
changing rooms. The building is covered by the Parish Council insurance policy
and following recent insurance claims this has resulted in the cost of excesses
being borne by the Parish Council. One conclusion following the insurance work
has been that electrical circuits need to be re-wired to bring them up to
modern standards, for which quotations have been obtained by ASRA. The
quotations range from £2,000 to £2,300 and cover work on both the
club area and the changing rooms. On a proposal by Councillor Nunn, seconded by
Councillor Mountain it was RESOLVED that a contribution of £1,000 be
offered to ASRA to cover part of this work.

The Woodman Arms at Hammerpot is just one of 360 public houses owned by the brewing group Fuller, Smith & Turner PLC. However, at the group's recent annual Pub of the Year Awards, The Woodman gained the accolade as the best pub in the "Best Country/Village Pub" category. Apart from what The Woodman has to offer, chairman Michael Turner described it as one of the prettiest pubs in their chain. Overall winner of the group's "2010 Pub of the Year" went to The Old House at Home in Romsey.
The Woodman was almost completely destroyed after the disastrous fire in February 2004, but was rebuilt by Gales Brewery and re-opened almost a year later on 4 February 2004. You can see photos of the aftermath of the fire, re-building, and restored building on our February 2005 archive news page.

Over 200 people gathered at Angmering Community Centre yesterday afternoon (Sunday 5 December) for a Memorial Event for Leslie Baker who died on 23 October, as reported on these pages. Some 26 members of his family, including his wife Grace and their four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, travelled to Angmering for the occasion.
Static photo displays, photo albums, and scrapbooks for attendees to read were a testament to his life, and images of Leslie and his family from his early years, wartime RAF service, school headship days, and involvement with many Angmering organisations, were projected onto the large screen in the main hall providing us at times with some amusement and at other times with a reminder to us of how much he contributed to the village over the 55 years he and Grace were living here.
The Memorial Event was overseen by Eric Holmes who not only provided us with his own memories of Leslie but introduced tributes from village organisations interspersed with lively music and singing from family members, notably his grandchildren, daughter-in-law (piano), and a friend.
Family members provided their own memories, his daughter Penny reading a lovely humorous poem she had composed and which she had read at Leslie's funeral service. Chairman of Angmering Parish Council, Cllr Nigel Nunn, led the village tributes followed by Canon Mark Standen on behalf of St Margaret's Church and CofE School, and representatives from The Angmering Society, Angmering Twinning Association and Rustington Players. Other tributes came from retired teachers from St Margaret's School (one an ex-pupil), friends, and a lady who represented the Ouistreham twinning association, who had travelled from the Normandy town especially for the event.
At the end of all these tributes, which extended over two hours, everybody present joined in singing Music Hall songs from the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Many readers will be aware that Leslie came from a Music Hall performing family and that he and Grace had given more than 400 performances of their own "Memories of the Music Hall" act to hospitals, nursing homes and clubs throughout Sussex over a 10 year period after Leslie's retirement as head of St Margaret's School. The afternoon suitably ended with everybody standing and singing the poignant old Music Hall favourite "Goodbye-ee", which had also been performed at Leslie's funeral.
Earlier in the day, family members had gathered in St Nicholas' Garden to plant a Sorbus Vilmorinii tree accompanied by a memorial plaque (see photos).
This Sunday (5 December) St Margaret's is hosting its annual Christingle service at 3.30pm in Church. It will be more 'hands on' this year with the children having the chance to make their own Christingles from 3.30pm, and then the service starting at 4pm, followed by refreshments. Any money donated will be given to the Childrens' Society. All very welcome. [Mark Standen (Rector)]

Angmering awoke this morning with up to 2cm of snow which has generally not been too disruptive. As a northern friend of mine might have remarked - Now't but dustin' ! Armed with a new salt bin next to The Lamb, the Parish Council were out at 8.00am gritting pavements around the shops. Here are a few seasonal pictures taken this morning:
