Sophie's Fund update

Some £45,000 has now been raised towards Sophie's Fund. Due to the lack of aftercare the NHS is able to provide - as the procedure will be taking place in the USA - more money will be required to pay for the physio treatment which will be necessary for five weeks after the operation.

Sophie and mum Debbie leave for the USA in mid-July and hopefully will have Spirit FM joining them doing a live radio show during Sophie's time in the USA. A new web page for Sophie should be up and running by the end of this week - it will be located at www.helpsophiewalk.co.uk

Debbie tells Angmering Village Life: "The support given by the Angmering community means the world to us and we look forward to showing off Sophie's new feet - and hopefully walking - as soon as she is strong enough".

Two fund-raising events are planned for Sophie's cause of which readers may be interested, namely:

Angmering School Leaving Prom

The Angmering School has asked us to publish the following letter for the particular attention of the school's neighbours:

Dear Neighbour

I am writing to let you know that we are holding our Year 11 Leaving Prom this Friday 18 June.

The arrangements this year are different to previous years. The Prom will be taking place at the Grand Hotel in Brighton. However students will still be arriving at the school in their limos from 5.30pm. Coaches have been arranged to take the students to Brighton at 7pm. A police presence has been requested from 4.30pm till 6pm to help with traffic and parking controls.

Coaches will arrive back at school at approximately 11.30pm and the police will be on hand from 11pm until midnight to oversee the students return and traffic control.

There will be no firework display this year and we hope there will be no disturbance to residents.

Yours sincerely

Angmering Arts plans "Hello Day" and "Celebration Day" project

Angmering Arts and the community arts group - Articurl - are working together on a two-part innovative project, supported by West Sussex County Council . "Hello Day" will take place in Angmering on Thursday 15th July when villagers will be invited to take a photograph of where they are and what they are doing during that day. This will provide a community snapshot of a day in the life of Angmering in 2010.

The organisers will be placing disposable cameras in shops and other venues around the village so that everyone will have the opportunity to participate, even if they do not have a camera to hand. However, anyone can use their own camera to take photographs and bring the prints along to "Celebration Day" later in the month. Kelly and Cass from Articurl and members of Angmering Arts will be in the village on 15th July, encouraging everyone to take part.

The "Celebration Day" will take place on Sunday 25th July when people can bring their photographs along to the Angmering Community Centre, and place them on the notice boards. As part of this project, Neil Rogers-Davis from Angmering Village Life will be displaying some of his archive photos of village life in the past on the notice boards, so that a comparison can be made of how life used to be in Angmering and how it is now.

Angmering Arts co-ordinator, Carole Mason told Angmering Village Life: "As part of the Celebration Day, Angmering Arts is inviting everyone to participate also in the Blooming Great Tea Party campaign to raise funds for the Marie Curie Cancer Care. We will be providing tea and cakes at the Community Centre as well as a raffle, and asking you to donate to this nationwide campaign which hopes to raise one million pounds for the charity this summer. (see www.mariecurie.org.uk )"

Carole added: "We hope that everyone will find this project as exciting as we do and participate wherever you are in the village".

Bramley Green roads' adoption update

West Sussex County Council have recently issue the following statement on this issue:

As far as the adoption process is concerned matters will proceed once the 20mph Zone issue is resolved by the Consortium. The residents within Bramley Green were consulted over the potential solution to the problem at the end of last year and the results of this process have shown the majority of the residents who replied are in favour of the additional traffic calming measures being proposed in Nursery Way. The residents would however like something done about various parking problems that exist along the roads within the development as well.

The Consortium have therefore been asked to ease the parking problems in conjuction with the solution to the 20mph Zone issue and we are waiting for these details to be submitted for our consideration, together with the detailed design of the proposed traffic calming measures in Nursery Road. Once we are satisfied in this respect, the 20mph Zone Traffic Regulation Order will be re-advertised (the Parish will be formally consulted) and if no objections are raised to the proposal, the Consortium will be asked to implement the traffic calming and parking improvements at the earliest opportunity.

New Parish Councillor
Councillor Nunn said that Mr Ron Grout had applied to become a Parish Councillor and asked him to say a few words. Mr Grout said he had lived in the Parish for 16 years and wanted to work for the good of the Parish. It was unanimously RESOLVED that Mr Grout be co-opted as a Member of Angmering Parish Council. Mr Grout then signed his acceptance of office form and took his place on the Council.

Police visibility in the village
Councillor Nunn said he had had a recent meeting with our MP Nick Herbert who also under the new government has responsibility for the Police Service. He raised the Council’s concerns about the lack of police visibility within the Parish. Nick Herbert asked that he be copied in on all correspondence. Nick Herbert also visited the site of the proposed new houses. He felt the same as the Parish Council that we need to wait until the detailed report is available.

Angmering Cricket Club - Continuing to progress

Angmering Cricket Club has continued to make excellent progress over the first half of 2010. Leading the way are junior coaches Rob Skinner and Richard Gardner who successfully completed and passed their England Cricket Board Level 1 coaching course, which was run by Sussex County Cricket Club. The Course was designed to equip coaches with practical skills in running training sessions and ensuring that all juniors are actively involved. Both Rob and Richard, the clubs first ever qualified coaches are putting their newly acquired skills into practice as they run the clubs junior coaching sessions on Thursday evenings.

Further matches throughout August and September are currently being planned.

Angmering Cricket Club has also secured four local sponsors for the 2010 season. The support of David O Jones, Chandlers BMW, Projects Abroad and Holmes Estate Agents' is warmly received as the club seeks to offer an enjoyable sporting environment for both its adult and junior members.

St Margaret's Church - What is happening?

The following is issued on behalf of St Margaret's Church:

Why is there scaffolding round the two new extensions?
"During the course of carrying out the snagging process after the reordering work was completed last year, we became aware that the roof tiling was unsatisfactory. Following a number of meetings with our architect, the roof tile manufacturers, the chairman of the DAC and Farnrise Construction, it was decided that the roofs should be stripped and the existing tiles re-laid. This work will be carried out by a different roofing contractor from the one who carried out the work originally. Whilst the scaffolding is in place, it will also give us the opportunity to look at the chancel roof, which was re-roofed during the reordering by the same contractor.

There are two other areas of concern which still need to be resolved. First, we are not satisfied with the wooden floor in the nave and the two side aisles. It is noticeable that a number of boards are split and in some areas are starting to lift. The floor has been inspected by the suppliers and the contractors and we are waiting for a report from our architect as to the proposed course of action to remedy the problems. Secondly, we are concerned about is the lighting. Over the last twelve months we have had continually to replace bulbs in the chancel and nave. In addition there are problems with lights in aisles and the emergency lights. Farnrise have appointed another electrical contractor to deal with the lighting because the original one is no longer in business.

In order to resolve these problems, the church will be closed between August 16th & 20th to carry out the necessary work. Stronger lights will also be fitted over lectern. All this work will be carried out at no cost to the church and will be overseen by our architect and our BAG team.

If you have any questions please do contact me."

Youth Bus - Drivers Wanted

We've received this plea:

My name is Chris Lynch and I am the Acting Chair of Angmering Youth Forum, a small band of people trying to launch the Double Decker Bus project that started a couple of years ago. We now have some funding from West Sussex Youth Service and the Bus recently sailed through its MOT! It is all about the lack of Youth provision in the Village. Angmering School are superb in running some after school clubs but not everyone likes to remain in that environment. Our Bus is a fun vehicle and we will do what the youth tell us they want.. as long as it is legal! We have all the latest Computer games on board.

Our real problem is a lack of helpers, especially Bus Drivers!. There only about 6 of us dedicated to the project and we need at least 20 so we can have a rota. Initially we will start at Decoy Drive on a Thursday Evening but would look to expand down to the Skateboard Park in Bramley Green probably on a Tuesday evening.

What we can offer in return, if you are not already a Bus Driver, is a driver training opportunity. We have negotiated funding to train some of our volunteers to drive a bus!...so how about it??

Please get in touch with me, Chris Lynch, on 01903 859713 or email christopher_lynch@sky.com

Snippets from the draft Minutes of the Parish Council's Leisure Committee Meeting on 19 May 2010

Skate Park
SW reported that she had spoken to a fencing contractor recommended by Arun District Council and that fencing panels to surround the skate bowl came in at between £40-£48.50 per metre. The Committee discussed and agreed that seating in re-cycled plastic around the bowl would probably be a better option. SW will calculate the number of seats required and provide a costing. SW will also contact the ‘A’ and ‘B’ team at Littlehampton Town Council to see if they can provide the labour for the concrete apron around the bowl.

Play Areas
Naming of the Play Areas- Following the article in the Parish Council Newsletter it has been suggested by one gentleman to name the play areas after ‘Apples’. The Committee decided to call the three areas Pippin, Russet and Discovery.
Play Area Signage - SW will obtain quotes for signs that can be securely fixed to the play area railings. The signs will have the play area names plus contact numbers and warnings for anti social behaviour, dog fouling etc.
Play area inspections - SW reported that she and the Clerk had inspected all the play areas after the latest report from Arun District Council. Most of the things pointed out on the inspection report were wear and tear and were things that would need addressing in the future. The subsidence issued was being discussed by the Clerk and ADC.
