Hansel and Gretel

If you want an alternative to the traditional pantomime then Oxfordshire Touring Theatre Company's new production of “Hansel and Gretel” could be exactly what you are looking for.

The original and much loved Grimm brothers' tale is well known. Playwright Mike Kenney has given the story a new twist without losing any of its essence; there are a few surprises and a fair helping of seasonal fun.

There are quite a few songs, courtesy of an original and catchy score by composer Andrew Dodge and an ingenious set design.

Angmering Community Association is bringing Hansel and Gretel to St Margaret's Primary School in Arundel Road, Angmering on Friday 9th January 2009 starting at 6 p.m. The show lasts for two hours including an interval.

Tickets are: Adults £6; Children £3; Concessions £5; Family Ticket (2+2) £15. Available from the Parish Council Office, The Square, Angmering, St. Margaret's School Office or by phoning 07806-489502.

The company recommends that it best suits children over 6.

Snippets from Parish Council Minutes of Meeting on 15 December 2008

WSCC Report - County Councillor Deborah Urquhart advised that some new facilities are being considered for the Angmering School and that the issue of the rear access to the school would be solved. Councillor Nigel Nunn asked that lighting be considered for the footpath from the A259 to the school.

Arun District Council Report - District Councillor Julie Hazlehurst reported that Arundel Road was not an approved route to the Poling recycling plant and heavy goods vehicle movements would be closely monitored. Dog fouling issues in Angmering are being pursued with Arun District Council.

Safer Routes to Schools/A259/Footpaths - Councillors were concerned over reports of an accident involving a pupil of Angmering School when crossing the A259. The Chairman suggested that a letter should be sent to the Littlehampton Gazette and Councillor Hadley will compose this and show to Councillors before sending. A footpath along the north side of the A259 from the Windmill roundabout to Station Road is under consideration. The cost of a footbridge over the A259 would cost around £600,000.

Community Centre - Councillor Steven Mountain advised that site work is still on schedule to start on 12th January 2009. Grants for the ground source heating system have not yet been confirmed. A meeting with the kitchen suppliers will take place on 18th December 2008. Councillor Mountain proposed that the JCT Contract now be signed. This was seconded by Councillor Sue Smith and was agreed with 4 Councillors in favour and 1 abstention.

Traders' Evening - This was not so well attended as in 2007. Taking on the tombola were down at £219. The road closures were not a success and this will be referred to the Highways Committee for review.

The full minutes of the meeting can be read by clicking here.

New housing could be forced on Angmering

For the last two or three years, Arun District Council (ADC) has been preparing its housing strategy for new homes in the area which is being forced on it by the Government. Questionnaires were sent out to local authorities and interested parties by ADC at the end of 2005 and no doubt it has taken the responses into consideration. The draft Local Development Framework (LDF) containing ADC's proposals looks at locations to build some 11,300 homes by the year 2026. Some, of course, are already in the planning stage, but that still leaves up 6,000 homes to be built, 40% of which are to be affordable housing. Out of three options in the draft LDF, two are proposing new housing in Angmering on its eastern side. One proposal is for a massive 1,500 dwellings and the other for 500 dwellings. Both locations would be on greenfield sites. A six month public consultation period will be announced in the New Year.

Many people in Angmering will be aghast at these new proposals, especially as Angmering has made a major contribution to new housing in the last few years with the building of Bramley Green which led to a 25% increase in Angmering's population. The lack of infastructure for the Bramley Green development has always been criticised, and it could only be worse if new housing is to be built on the east side of the parish. Bramley Green is a substantial development but 1500 new houses would be 2½ times bigger.

Greater details of the LDF proposals can be found in today's Littlehampton Gazette

Snippets from Parish Council Joint Finance and Policy & Resouces Committees Minutes of Meeting on 26 November 2008

Budget/Precept 2009/2010
The draft budget prepared by the Clerk with input from Committee Chairs was considered and some minor amendments made. The Chair of the E & L Committee had asked for a new reserve to be created for the Community Centre running costs with the £15,000 from the current years budget which would be unspent. The Parish Council has agreed to contribute a maximum of £30,000, if required, towards the first years running costs. By establishing this reserve, only £15,000 would have to be included in the 2009/10 budget.

The Chair of the Highways Committee asked for a reserve to be established for future work improving Honey Lane with unspent funds from the Highways budget. Councillor Steven Mountain reminded the Committee that the Chair of Finance had previously said that new reserves could only be established if there were specific spending plans for the money. The Committee agreed that both requests fulfilled the criteria and resolved that the reserves be established. The committee further resolved that a virement of £34,000 from the loan provision in the current years budget to the Community Centre reserve should be made.

A gross expenditure budget of £244,061 for 2009/10 was agreed with a precept requirement of £202,333 after taking into account projected income and surplus carried forward. This will be put to Full Council for final approval.

The precept per band D property will equate to £62.76 which is an increase of £0.84 (1.35%) for the year.

Staff Pay Award
Agreement has been reached between the National Joint Council and the Employers to award an interim pay increase of 2.45% with effect from April 2008. Resolved that this increase be paid to staff with immediate effect.

Fletcher's Field Wall
It was resolved to award the rebuilding to Mr. Bryan Wallace who has tendered a price of £3300. The Clerk will speak to Mr. Wallace about some "through the wall" drainage pipes before confirming the contract.

Fire may not be fishy!

A fire today in a garage immediately behind The Big Fry caused some disruption to its services. The fire was discovered at 5.00am this morning by the occupants of the flat above the fish & chip shop. The fire services were called but the fire caused severe damage to the garage and to the large walk-in freezer inside. It is not thought that the fire was the result of criminal activity.

Although there was some disruption to services, owner Mark Edwards obtained additional supplies and, with some stock inside the shop, was able to maintain services both at lunchtime and this evening. Mark is confident that a normal service will operate on Monday.

Village turns out for fun evening

Despite a really cold night, many villagers turned out to enjoy the entertainment yesterday evening at the Traders' Christmas Night in the centre of the village which was closed to all traffic. Below are some photos of the activities etc including rides from Harris's Fair, the new Angmering Youth Bus which was on display, racing cars and bikes from the Angmering Motor Sports Centre, and the town crier from Arundel and her escort.

The Library did a roaring trade with its book sale while its adjacent children's centre was a great hit with the younger members of the community who came along. Mulled wine and mince pies provided by St Margaret's Church in the church hall were very welcome on such a chilly night, and their slide presentation of the new building of the church was enjoyed and appreciated by visitors.

Traders' Christmas Night - Wednesday 10 December

........ What's on

Wednesday 10 December is the annual Traders' Christmas Night in the village centre. It starts at 6pm and will go on to approx. 9.00pm. The majority of the shops will be open in the village centre on the evening. This is a fun evening for all the family, so don't miss it!

There will be the usual Funfair and Amusements. This year Santa's Grotto will be in Mavericks hairdressers with free admission and free gifts for everyone. The massive Tombola, with 100 prizes (including digi-box, cordless drill, hfi), will be held as usual in the Parish Council offices and there will be consolation prizes for anyone who buys tickets and does not win, so in other words - everyone will be a winner. The Parish Council will also be offering snacks and refreshments.

The first prize in the Raffle is a Nintendo Wii as this was so popular last year and tickets are already available in many of the shops and The Lamb. There are loads of other prizes, all donated by the village shops, including a huge hamper, £50 note, meal vouchers, car valeting voucher, plus other items.

There will be a huge Lucky Dip at only 20p a go, and every one who pays for a ride will receive a voucher for a free go on the lucky dip. Refreshments will be available in many of the shops and the church hall. The library will be holding their usual Book Sale and the Arundel Town Crier will be there to guide people to what is going on.

The organisers are delighted to announce that the Youth Bus will be making its first appearance since re-furbishment was started on it, and although it isn't completely finished, it will be open for everyone to come on board and have a look around. The Manor Hotel will be providing hot food from the bus.

........ Road Closures

There will be a road closure in the village from 5pm to about 10pm, so no vehicles will be allowed in or through the village during this period. Areas to be closed will be the main road through the village from Chandlers to the Village Hall, and Arundel Road from the church to the village centre, and in the High Street from the The Hair Gallery (on Stubbs Hill) to the village centre.

....... Bus Route Change

Due to the road closures being implemented on Wednesday evening, the No. 9 bus route will be diverted from 5.00pm. The bus will now access the village via the Angmering Bypass (A280) into Water Lane, where there will be a temporary bus stop in the vicinity of 'Arun Angling'. The following roads are the section of the route that will NOT be served: Dappers Lane, Beech View, Chantryfield Road, Angmering Village Green, Station Road. Bus stop information will be placed on each stop by 9th December at the latest.

St Margaret's Church Reordering Fact Sheet No. 11

(Reproduced here on behalf of St Margaret's Church)

Getting Nearer!

This month has seen very good progress on all fronts:

We have now found evidence of deathwatch beetle and woodworm in the reading desk and our architect is taking advice from an expert in timber preservation and the diocese concerning this. There is concern that the desk should not be brought back into the church on the wooden floor but this all depends on the advice that we receive.

A planning application has been made to prune the two yew trees by one third following advice from Arun's tree officer. We hope to do this work early in the New Year.

Over the last eighteen months there have been a number of leaks in the main church roof. Recently we had one night of very heavy rain with exceptionally strong winds, which resulted in a number of leaks in the north and south aisles. Following a survey by our architect and based on his advice the PCC is of a mind not to go ahead with any major repairs till after the project is completed and when we know the result of our applications for outside grants to cover the cost of replacing the roof. Since the night of the exceptional rain and wind there have been no further problems.

With the work progressing, plans are in hand for moving back into church and these have been discussed by the PCC at a recent away day and will be announced early in the New Year. It is expected that the first services will be in church on March 22nd but this date has still to be confirmed.

Everyone is welcome to come to the church hall on the night of the Traders' Evening, December 10th, when we will be showing a presentation of the reordering both inside and out of St Margaret's.

If you have any questions regarding the reordering please would you direct these to me either by email (richardhance@o2.co.uk) or by phone 01903 788792 on weekdays.
Thank you.

Indian Takeaway opens today

As mentioned in our news item of 23 November, Shafiques open their Indian takeaway in Angmering village today (Tuesday). Shafique Uddin has lived in Worthing for 35 years and it is where his family has grown up. For many years, Shafique has run a very successful Indian restaurant and takeaway on the Goring Road in West Worthing which has received many plaudits, and that same menu is being brought to Angmering where his nephew will be the head chef. The shop will be managed by Tanvir Ahmed.

At a pre-opening night yesterday evening attended by a number of near neighbours and village shopkeepers, the charming Shafique, his son Sami, and friendly staff gave an insight into what Angmering has in store with some delicious small samples of the food on offer. Over 200 items are on the menu including dishes that will be new to many of their clients such as Fawzia which consists of delicately seasoned rainbow trout in a medium curry sauce served on a bed of vegetable rice. Menus are available from the shop in The Square or from Woodies News.

Jack Clavey Fund offers assistance to village organisations

Do you need financial assistance for a leisure organisation project in Angmering? You do - then perhaps the Jack Clavey Fund can help. The fund has been in existence for more than ten years now, and among several organisations that have been helped to date are Angmering Football Club, the Angmering Chorale and the Angmering Scout Group.

A former builder, Jack Clavey was born and bred in Angmering. He played both football and cricket for the village clubs - and later for Littlehampton F.C. and Arundel C.C. - and was a one-time member of Ham Manor Golf Club. Jack never forgot the village of his birth, and when he died in Devon at the age of 82, in September, 1996, he left the residue of his estate - more than £160,000 - to benefit sporting and leisure activities in Angmering.

Chairman of the fund, Mr. Ray Chitty, of Arundel, said: "On one of Jack's visits to Arundel he asked me to be the executor of his will and outlined his plans for a charitable trust fund to provide sporting and leisure facilities in Angmering, but it was only after his death that I learned the true extent of his generosity. I had to set up a trust fund with another of his friends, Mr. David Darby, who lives near Chichester, and the other trustees are Mr. Peter Jones, a solicitor, of Stuckey Carr and Co., of Storrington, and two Angmering residents - estate agent Mr. Eric Holmes ,and well-known sportsman, Mr Peter Wells, who is the fund's secretary. On Jack's instructions, the residue of his estate was invested, with the interest being used in the village."

Several organisations have been aided financially, and the trustees have generally looked favourably upon those who are seen to be helping themselves. "Jack would have wanted it that way," said Mr Chitty, who added: "We always look carefully at applications for financial assistance, and in this respect both Eric and Peter have been able to put their local knowledge to good use."

Applications should be made to Mr Peter Wells, at 37, Bewley Road, Angmering, West Sussex BN16 4JL, and should include details (and cost) of the scheme and any fundraising that has been done towards the cost.
