Miles Family of Angmering

There has been a Miles family resident in Angmering since the early 18th Century. It is now apparent that they arrived in Angmering from the neighbouring parish of Burpham in about 1721. In the mid-1730's, the Miles seem to disappear for about 7 years and then re-appear again, this time with many of them with similar Christian names being recorded in the Angmering parish registers as "Mills". Upper Barpham Farm, Nov. 2002 However, some were still recorded as "Miles". Therefore the conclusion is being reached that a few of the Miles family were recorded differently due to 1) phonetic pronunciation (strong Sussex accent), 2) spelling capability of the clergy/parish clerks, and 3) ignorance - or perhaps a combination of all three!

The principal Miles branch were tenant farmers in the Ecclesden area for nearly 200 years and, by the mid-19th Century a branch was also tenant farmers at Upper Barpham (see photo above - right) and later at Lower Barpham. By about 1760 (or perhaps much earlier), the Miles family were tenants at Upper Ecclesden Farm (see photo below) and some Wills, Inventories, Land Tax, and Rates records relating to them are available in the West Sussex Record Office. The Will of William Miles (1735-1814) is particularly interesting as it records many family relationships and helps us produce a reasonably accurate chart of the Miles family. General Comments:

If the MILLS were separate from the MILES, it means that a whole generation of MILES may have disappeared and then came back just a few years later to Angmering. This seems illogical. Note that Kitty's parents were George & Elizabeth MILES but entries in the preceding years were for children of George & Elizabeth MILLS.

Notes

1. Is Kitty a diminutive of Catherine? Kitty Mills and Catherine Miles could well have been one person.

2. Brider may well have been the mis-spelling of the local name Bridger.

3. Were Anne MILLS and Ann MILES one and the same?

4. Were Sarah MILLS and Sarah MILES one and the same?

5. Elizabeth MILES was buried in 1768, possibly following childbirth of a son David who died soon after without being Baptised. Note that George's wife, Elizabeth MILLS (nee Burcher), stopped having children at this point, perhaps another sign that their correct name was MILES.
