Angmering Probate Inventories 1596 - 1795

In the past, wills and probate were a matter for the church courts, and there is a small but marvellously informative set of Probate Inventories connected with this at the WSRO. In 1529 Parliament introduced a new act requiring executors to compile "trewe and perfyte" inventories of all the goods and cattle of the deceased, real estate was not included so the value of land and buildings is seldom assessed. This remained the law until 1859. However, those that remain largely date through the 17th century and into the 18th, at the end of an era that bordered on the medieval, when people were much more self sufficient, and farming was still entirely by strength of arm and ox. [R W Standing 2003]

The West Sussex Record Office currently has a project to transcribe West Sussex Inventories. The Angmering Inventories were transcribed by Mr R W Standing from East Preston, mainly between 2001 and 2002, and these were later checked by the Project Coordinator, Mrs Weir.

Mr Standing also states that these are straight transcripts of the inventories, as written. The result is an aid to researchers that may be of considerable value. However, if any particular inventory, or the whole set, is to be analysed in detail, much more work may be needed. The original documents vary from good to fragmentary in their state of survival. Many words are difficult to read, or unreadable, but careful study may allow reasonable deductions to be made from the context. In general this transcript has each line the same as in the original, but the valuations follow at the end of each section, whereas in the original the value will often be found central to the set of goods with a these bracketed. " L" is used for for £, "s" for shillings, and "d" for pennies. When the current transcription of West Sussex Probate Inventories Project is complete, and an aggregative analysis is made of them, some indication of price movement may be evident, and changes in technology.

Angmering Village Life Notes:

The value of an inventory does not by itself give a true indication of the wealth of the deceased as, generally, buildings and land were not included in the valuation process - only house contents, personal effects, implements and husbandry. To obtain some idea of the wealth of the deceased, local historians MW Standing and RGP Kerridge devised the following table of derived "Notional Social Groups" from over 3000 probate inventories from 59 West Sussex parishes on the coastal plain:

Notional Social Group Probate Inventory Value
  Very Poor Up to £5
  Poor £5 to £14.99
  Lower Middling £15 to £49.99
  Upper Middling £50 to £199.99
  Rich £200 to £554.99
  Very Rich Over £555

The word "Imprimis" indicates that it the first entry of the Inventory.

Angmering Village Life (AVL) wishes to thank both Mr Standing and the West Sussex Record Office for their kind permission to allow us to provide these transcriptions on our website. The 153 transcriptions have been converted to Adobe PDF files by AVL and are viewable by clicking on the "View" link in the Index below. AVL has also produced the undermentioned alphabetical index from an index provided by Mr Standing.
