Angmering History

Mills Family of Angmering

The Mills family appears to have arrived in Angmering circa 1740 a little after the Miles family who were not connected with them. However, some of the Miles family were quite clearly recorded as Mills which creates problems in identification.

While the principal branches of the Miles family were farmers, the Mills family were nearly all labourers or agricultural workers with the exception of Charles Mills (b1780) who was a minor farmer, working Hangleton Farm on the Worthing Road until the 1840s.

Many branches produced large families during the 18th and 19th Centuries and, as the same Christian names were often used, idenitification is again difficult. This is complicated further by the fact that there seems to have been two or possibly three unconnected Mills families alone in Angmering and adjoining Poling. By the early part of the 20th Century, there does not appear to to be any Mills remaining in Angmering.

With large families and the periodic economic crises, many of the Mills family would have been on the breadline. There are records of some finishing their days in the workhouse and children as young as 6 years old being "apprenticed" to the households of local farmers. There is also a record of one Kitty Mills receiving relief of 5/- from the parish Vestry c.1812 for "cloths".

General Comments:

If the MILLS were separate from the MILES, it means that a whole generation of MILES may have disappeared and then came back just a few years later to Angmering. This seems illogical. Note that Kitty's parents were George & Elizabeth MILES but entries in the preceding years were for children of George & Elizabeth MILLS.

Notes

1. Is Kitty a diminutive of Catherine? Kitty Mills and Catherine Miles could well have been one person.

2. Brider may well have been the mis-spelling of the local name Bridger.

3. Were Anne MILLS and Ann MILES one and the same?

4. Were Sarah MILLS and Sarah MILES one and the same?

5. Elizabeth MILES was buried in 1768, possibly following childbirth of a son David who died soon after without being Baptised. Note that George's wife, Elizabeth MILLS (nee Burcher), stopped having children at this point, perhaps another sign that their correct name was MILES.
