The Amoore Family of Angmering
The Amoore family did not come into the district until about 1724 and had largely gone from Angmering by the early 1900s but, in that relatively short period, had established themselves as a family of some wealth and influence.
Settling in neighbouring Poling, they farmed there for well over 100 years but by later in the 18th Century had taken over the tenancy of Old Place Farm, close to the village centre, owned by the Shelley family (later sold in the 19th Century to the Duke of Norfolk). This was a substantial farm of nearly 360 acres. Other branches of the family developed in Angmering becoming butchers and maltsters. Later, the butchers expanded into Worthing.
To give an idea of the family's status, before the re-building of St Margaret's in 1853, Richard Amoore "owned" a pew next to the altar, while Thomas Amoore had two pews in a prime position in the chancel. But even earlier, both Thomas Amoore and Richard Amoore were members of the Vestry, the parish's ruling body and forerunner of today's Parish Council.
The Tithe survey of 1839 shows us that Amoores owned about 54 acres of land in the parish including a property in the High Street and the Jerusalem windmill in what was later to become Station Road

In all of these trees, the vast majority of the data has come from Angmering Parish Registers but this has been supplemented on occasions with data from the IGI, Marriage Licences, and the 1881 Census.
