On Saturday 5th October 2013 the Freedom of the Town will be granted to the 30 Commando IX Group Royal Marines.
The ceremony will take place at Caffyns Field at 2pm followed by a march through the Town Centre with drums beating, colours flying and Bayonets fixed, led by the Band of HM Royals Marines, Portsmouth.
Everyone is invited to witness the ceremony and line the route.
Don't miss out on the Littlehampton Nautical Training Corps Band at 11am and the Littlehampton Sea Cadets Band at 12pm in the High Street.
FREE Hand waving flags will be given out on the day.
In 1944 Littlehampton became the base for the 30 Assault Unit (AU). James Bond author Ian Fleming joined the Royal Navy for the war’s duration and was the senior commanding officer for the unit – which was sometimes referred to as ‘Fleming’s private navy’ or ‘Fleming’s Red Indians’.
In 2010, the Devon-based Royal Marines Commando unit was renamed after the 30AU to better reflect its role and continue the former unit’s legacy. It is to this modern day unit the freedom of Littlehampton is being granted.
