Dont know what made me think about it but yesterday I was remembering my first car. A 1957 Hillman Minx with bench seats and column change. I paid £47.10.0(thats forty seven pounds and ten shillings) for it and loved it for quite a few years. I even hand painted it after I had sorted out the rust and could not afford a proper spray job! And, I can still remember the registration number. Am I really sad? Are there many of you who can remember the column change - it was great for me being short.
What about you? Do you lovingly remember YOUR first car?

First car was an aubergine Singer Chamois (up-market Hillman Imp), Reg HB 525 B. Bought it in 1974 about 6 weeks after passing my test. Driving from Harwich to Exmouth, the dynamo gave up as I left the services at the start of the M4. Battery got me to North or South Petherton before it gave up the ghost. Super little car and I guess it was one of the original hatchbacks. |

Mine was a brand new Austin Allegro 1100 DL in 'sand glow' reg no PX 306 B - it would have been a 'T' reg (1978) but I was in the army, stationed in W Germany at the time and the reg no was a 'BFG' one. As well as being tax free, it was an 'export model' which meant the seats were velour instead of plastic, there was a rear central arm rest and the plastic door trim went right up to the window - luxury!
I collected it from Bremerhaven and had not driven anything since I passed my test 2 years previous and now here I was on autobahns with no speed limit, I was terrified!
